Defend vs small donks, control the pot with medium strength, and then use small river bets to extract thin value from capped ranges.
Flop Analysis
Calling the small donk with second pair is the right response — we have clear showdown value and excellent pot odds, while raising would isolate us against stronger made hands.
**Ranges:** As the preflop raiser we retain the overpairs and strong Jx that the blind lacks, while the donk range skews toward one-pair hands and draws that are happy to stab small. Our second pair sits comfortably ahead of all their weaker one-pair and high-card stabs.
**Math:** Facing a ~33% pot bet we need about 20% equity, and second pair versus a wide donk range has far more than that, especially given we’re in position and can realize equity well.
---
> **Takeaway:** Versus small blind donk bets, default to calling with solid made hands and let position do the work instead of overplaying them with raises.
Turn Analysis
Checking back after the flop lead and turn check is fine; second pair without a draw plays well as pot-control and bluff-catcher, and betting mostly folds worse and keeps in better.
River Analysis
The small river stab is a nice thin value/protection bet: after two checks from the blind, our second pair is ahead of a lot of capped one-pair and high-card holdings that will pay off a small size.
**Ranges:** By river, the blind’s line (donk flop, check–check) heavily discounts strong Jx and sets and contains many underpairs, weak Tx, 2x and missed draws; our ten beats all those one-pair hands that didn’t improve. When we bet small, better hands rarely fold, but those are a minority of the checked range at this point.
**Sizing:** Using about one‑third pot targets exactly the hands we’re ahead of — weak pairs that hate facing a big bet but shrug-call a small one. A larger size would polarize us and fold out the very hands we want calls from while mostly getting action from stronger pairs and the occasional straight.
---
> **Takeaway:** When a capped range checks twice, a small river bet with medium strength can squeeze thin value from weaker pairs without exposing us to big swings.
