preflop Analysis
KQs is a standard Button open at this depth. It has strong postflop playability in position and comfortably opens for this size.
We built the pot well with top pair; the turn is a close mix, while the river value bet is mandatory and only slightly prefers a larger size.

The small c-bet is strong value. Our hand is near the top of the Button range here, and the small size keeps top pairs, pocket pairs, and much of Villain’s high-card range in while charging their equity. **Ranges:** Villain continues very widely, including ace-high and weaker Qx such as QJ or QT; our king kicker remains crucial against that calling range. Holding a queen removes some of those calls, but not enough to justify checking this high-equity hand. **Sizing:** Betting small is the right geometry on this dry texture. Our 1.8BB sizing is slightly below the preferred 2.1BB, but it accomplishes the same range-wide value and protection objective. --- > **Takeaway:** On dry boards, top pair with a premium kicker earns value through a small bet that keeps Villain’s range wide.
This is genuinely close: checking preserves showdown value, while betting remains a viable value/protection line. The 6BB barrel is reasonable, but a smaller probe or check fits the mix a little more naturally. **Board:** The 8 adds straight-draw possibilities to Villain’s range, so a check avoids isolating ourselves against the strongest continues. We are still ahead of most one-pair hands and high-card holdings, but our bet folds out much of the air that we already beat. **Plan:** After checking back, call sensible river probes on safe cards and value-bet favorable rivers when weaker Qx and lower pairs can still pay. If betting turn, use a size that invites calls from those hands rather than forcing a condensed continuing range. --- > **Takeaway:** With a vulnerable top pair deep stacked, check more often when a turn barrel mainly folds worse and retains stronger hands.
Betting river is clear value. Villain reaches this point with many worse Qx and lower pairs, and our top pair with a king kicker is far ahead of the range that calls. **Ranges:** Top pairs call at a very high rate, while lower pairs and pocket pairs supply some thinner calls or folds. The river also permits only the 45 straight, so the missed holdings and weaker pairs still leave ample value targets. **Sizing:** Our 14BB bet is effective and close to the preferred medium sizing. The strongest construction uses roughly 16.4BB, extracting slightly more from the Qx-heavy calling range without turning our hand into an overbet bluff-catcher spot. --- > **Takeaway:** When worse top pair calls often on the river, value-bet confidently and use a size that captures those calls.
