We navigated pre and turn well, but the flop c-bet is too ambitious and the river overbet call with a non-nut straight on a paired board is the big leak.
Flop Analysis
Checking is clearly better with our weak draw and range disadvantage; this c-bet over-invests into a condensed, pair-heavy range while we are still only high card with an OESD.
**Ranges:** SB’s flatting range is stuffed with pocket pairs, Jx and 9x (hands like 8h8s, Ah9h, AdJd), while our 3-bet range has many unpaired overcards and weaker draws; our specific hand sits in the lower-mid part of that range.
**Board:** This semi-wet, two-tone Jack-high texture connects SB’s condensed range better than ours and gives them strong made hands plus good draws, so aggression from us gets called by strength and folds out mostly worse air.
**Sizing:** If we do bet, the solver prefers a smaller, more controlled size (around half-pot or less) rather than ~70% pot; the big sizing bloats the pot with a hand that wants to realize equity cheaply rather than force action.
---
> **Takeaway:** On disadvantageous, semi-wet boards versus a condensed caller range, weak draws should mostly check to realize equity instead of barreling big.
Note: Flop bet with a weak OESD into a stronger, condensed range is lower EV than checking, and the chosen large sizing worsens it.
Turn Analysis
Turn check is good: after the board pairs top card, our pair+OESD functions as a bluff-catcher/draw, and betting would just jam equity into a range full of two pair, trips, and full houses.
**Ranges:** SB now has many very strong hands (two pair like Kc9c, pocket-pair+board two pair like 8h8s, trips and full houses like QdJd, 9c9h), while our range is polarized but this combo is in the weaker tier of that polarized segment.
**Board:** The paired Jack sharply increases villlain’s nut density and reduces fold equity for a turn barrel; our hand gains showdown value (we now beat pure underpairs/high-card) and still has straight outs, so checking protects our range and realizes equity.
---
> **Takeaway:** When a card heavily strengthens the caller’s range and only marginally improves us, shift from betting to checking and treat marginal draws as bluff-catchers.
River Analysis
Despite making a straight, folding to this huge river overbet is the better play; our straight is not the nuts and is in poor shape versus SB’s extremely value-heavy range on a paired board.
**Board:** The river completes our unique 8T straight but leaves the board paired with J; full houses are very live, and structurally any quads/boats always beat our straight while the board itself gives SB many strong two-pair-plus holdings.
**Ranges:** Our overall range still contains full houses and JJx-type holdings (e.g. 9c9h, Jh8s) that are much better bluff-catchers, whereas SB’s range at this node is dominated by trips, boats and strong two pair (hands like Ac9c, Kh9h, QdJd, 9d9h) with relatively few natural bluffs after calling flop and checking turn.
**Math:** Facing an overbet of ~2.36× pot we need ~29% equity; range data shows the population of hands SB gets here with is value-heavy, so our straight behaves closer to a bluff-catcher than to a value hand, and folding a non-nut straight and continuing with boats and top full houses keeps the range’s call frequency in a better EV region.
---
> **Takeaway:** Versus massive overbets on paired boards, even strong but non-nut makes like straights often belong in the folding bucket while we reserve calls for full houses and better.
Note: Calling off versus a huge overbet on a paired board with a non-nut straight is a significant overcall; our range has better hands to continue with, and folding this combo is higher EV.
