Flop Analysis
Calling is the only viable option with bottom pair and a gutshot on this high-card heavy board.
We correctly defended a wide range preflop and realized our equity until the river completed multiple straights, making our pair a clear fold.
Calling is the only viable option with bottom pair and a gutshot on this high-card heavy board.
The turn brings a flush draw to go with our pair and gutshot, making this an easy continue against the second barrel. **Ranges:** SB's range is polarized between strong broadway hands (AQ, KQ, QJ) and semi-bluffs like flush draws or open-enders. Our hand has significant equity against the bluffing portion and enough outs to improve against the value. **Board:** The 2h is a blank for the main broadway range but picks up a heart draw for us. This increases our equity realization as we can now hit a flush or a straight to win the pot. **Math:** We are getting 2.6:1 on a call, requiring roughly 28% equity. Between our pair, gutshot, and new flush draw, we comfortably exceed this threshold. --- > **Takeaway:** When you pick up additional equity on the turn with a pair + draw combo, you are almost never folding to a single bet.
The river is a disastrous card for our specific holding, completing almost every possible straight draw. **Board:** The Kc is extremely connected. Any Ace now has a straight, and any 9 has a straight. Our pair of Tens is effectively a bluff-catcher that loses to almost all of SB's value range. **Ranges:** SB has a massive nut advantage here with hands like AQ, AJ, and AK all making straights or top pair. Even their 'bluffs' like 9x or Ax have backed into straights, leaving us with almost zero winning showdown equity. **Blockers:** While we block some T9 and J9 combinations, we don't block the most critical straight components (Aces and Nines). Folding is the high-frequency play as we are at the very bottom of our continuing range. --- > **Takeaway:** On boards where the river completes the most obvious draws (like a 4-straight), be prepared to fold even decent absolute hand strengths.
