Folding middle pair here would allow Villain to profitably bluff any two cards, as we need to defend roughly 50% of our range to meet MDF. **Ranges:** Villain's pot-sized bet is polarized between strong 7x, straights (45s), and many straight draws (54, 85, 98). Our 6x is ahead of all their air and draws. **Math:** We need ~33.5% equity to call. With 54% equity against Villain's range, this is a mandatory continue despite the large sizing. --- > **Takeaway:** Don't let large bet sizes scare you off middle pair on low boards where Villain has many natural bluffs.
Checking is standard, but betting small is a viable mix to leverage our nut advantage on a board that now favors our 5x and 85s combos.
Folding is a significant error. The 4s is a dynamic card, but we have picked up a gutshot to go with our pair, and the pot odds are too good to pass up. **Math:** We are getting 2.2:1 and need ~31% equity. Our hand has ~45% equity, making this a clear call even against a range that includes many straights. **Blockers:** Our Kc is a useful unblocker, as it doesn't interfere with Villain's potential spade draws or straight draws like 85o or 98o that might be semi-bluffing. **Plan:** By calling, we leave ourselves with a very shallow SPR (0.43) for the river. We are essentially committed to bluff-catching most bricks or realizing our straight equity on a 5. --- > **Takeaway:** When you pick up additional equity (like a gutshot) on the turn, you must be even less inclined to fold your made pairs.
Note: Folding middle pair with a gutshot while getting 2.2:1 is too tight; we have plenty of equity to continue against a wide BB range.
