Flop Analysis
Checking is mandatory. This board texture heavily favors the 3-bettor's range of high broadways and Ace-X combos, leaving us with very little equity to lead.
While 44 is a standard open and call vs a 3-bet, it becomes a pure fold on high-card boards where we have zero connectivity.

Folding is the only viable play. Our underpair has plummeted in value on this board, and we lack any backdoor draws to justify a float. **Ranges:** HJ has a massive range advantage here with all the AK, AQ, and AA/QQ/99 combos. Our 44 is effectively a bluff-catcher that loses to almost their entire value range and even some of their bluffs like KJs. **Math:** Even though we are getting 4:1 on a call, our equity is only ~13%. We are not meeting the 20% equity threshold required to continue, especially since we will struggle to realize our equity OOP on later streets. --- > **Takeaway:** Don't feel obligated to defend small pocket pairs on high-card boards just because you called preflop; if you miss your set and the board is coordinated, just let it go.
