Flop Analysis
Checking is the standard play for our entire range as the caller. We have a middle pair and an open-ended straight draw, making this a high-equity hand that wants to see a turn.
Defend your pair and draw on the flop, then use your turned straight to lead for value when the aggressor checks back.
Checking is the standard play for our entire range as the caller. We have a middle pair and an open-ended straight draw, making this a high-equity hand that wants to see a turn.
Calling is the only play here. We have 51% equity against UTG's range and are getting excellent pot odds to continue with our pair plus OESD. **Ranges:** UTG's 66% pot sizing is polarized, containing overpairs, flushes, and bluffs like AsKx. We have plenty of 7x and 9x in our SB defending range to continue. **Math:** We need roughly 28% equity to call profitably. With a middle pair and 8 outs to a straight (excluding the spade outs which might be tainted), we easily clear this threshold. --- > **Takeaway:** Never fold a pair plus an open-ended straight draw on the flop when facing a single bet.
Checking is correct to protect our range, though we have now improved to an 8-high straight. By checking, we allow UTG to continue bluffing with their missed spade draws or overpairs. **Board:** The 4c is a fantastic card for us, completing the straight while being a non-spade. It doesn't change the fact that a flush is possible, which is why we don't lead out immediately. **Plan:** If UTG bets, we are never folding and will likely check-raise to maximize value before a fourth spade can roll off on the river. --- > **Takeaway:** When you hit your card on a dynamic board, checking to the aggressor is often the best way to induce bluffs or protect your checking range.
After UTG checks back the turn, they are capped at one-pair hands or missed draws. Leading for half-pot on the river is a solid way to extract value from 8x or pocket pairs that will check behind. **Ranges:** UTG's check on the turn significantly discounts flushes and sets. Our lead targets hands like JJ-99 or A8s that are now in 'bluff-catch' mode. **Sizing:** The 50% pot sizing is effective here. It's large enough to get value but small enough to look like a 'blocking bet' or a thin value stab, encouraging a call from a suspicious opponent. --- > **Takeaway:** When the aggressor caps their range by checking back a wet turn, don't be afraid to lead the river for value with your premiums.
