We correctly played a small pocket pair with caution on a monotone board, eventually realizing equity when the fourth spade arrived.

Flop Analysis

Checking back is the most robust play here. While we have the 2s for a low flush draw, our hand has very little showdown value and monotone boards favor the caller's range which contains more suited connectors.

Turn Analysis

The board pairing doesn't change much for our specific hand. We continue to check to realize our equity and avoid getting blown off our small flush draw by a check-raise.

River Analysis

Checking back the river is the safest line. While we have improved to a flush, the 4-flush on board makes our 2-high flush extremely vulnerable to any higher spade in the Big Blind's range. **Ranges:** The BB has many more spades than we do after defending preflop (6s7s, 8s9s, QsJx). By checking, we avoid value-betting into a better flush or a full house. **Board:** The 4s completes the 4-flush and also brings straight possibilities. With a pair of 3s on board, full houses are also a concern if BB has 55, TT, or 43s. **Position:** Being in position allows us to take the free showdown and win against BB's non-spade hands like Tx or 5x that they might have turned into a bluff. --- > **Takeaway:** When a 4-flush completes and you hold the lowest possible flush, checking back is often the highest EV play to avoid value-owning yourself.
