Defend tighter pre, fold the sandwiched draw multiway, and don’t turn weak pairs into thin river stabs on ugly runouts.
Flop Analysis
Checking as the preflop caller is standard; our hand (top pair plus straight draw) is strong but not nutted, and the board is very favorable to the preflop raiser’s overpairs and nut wheels.
**Ranges:** UTG has all the strong overpairs and nut A5/56 that smash this texture, while we have many more weak pairs and draws; once UTG bets and BU calls, both can easily have strong made hands or better draws than ours.
**Board:** The low, highly connected, two-tone board is very volatile — a lot of future cards will improve or counterfeit someone, and our draw isn’t to the nuts (5 completes better straights in their ranges too).
**Equity Realization:** Multiway and sandwiched, our raw equity with top pair + OESD converts poorly into real EV — we face strong ranges and will hate many turns, so folding to bet-and-call is better than continuing.
---
> **Takeaway:** With a decent but non-nut draw and weak made hand, fold more often when sandwiched between strength in multiway pots.
Note: Calling the flop after UTG bets and BU calls is too optimistic multiway; our equity is non-nut and realizes badly when we’re squeezed between two strong ranges.
Turn Analysis
Turn check is fine — our hand has downgraded to second pair plus straight draw, and after calling flop multiway we should avoid turning it into a bluff on a card that improves many ranges.
River Analysis
River is where we burn the most EV — after it checks through on the turn, we should treat second pair on this straight-and-flush-completing runout as a bluff-catcher and check, not lead.
**Board:** The runout completes multiple straights and a club flush while also improving a lot of BU’s flop-calling range (5x, 7x, slow-played strong draws), leaving our second pair as a clear medium-strength hand.
**Ranges:** Our line (check-call flop, check turn) caps us to pairs and some missed hearts, while BU retains all the stronger made hands; betting folds out worse pairs and high card while getting called or raised by straights, flushes, and better pairs/two pairs.
**Plan:** Optimal river plan is to check, then mostly fold versus larger bets and only bluff-catch vs small, suspicious sizings that can contain missed hearts or random floats.
---
> **Takeaway:** On scary rivers where many better hands arrive and we’re capped, use weak pairs as bluff-catchers at best, not as thin value or semi-bluff leads.
Note: Leading second pair into two players on a straight-and-flush-completing river is a clear mistake — we’re not value-betting worse, and better hands call or raise us.
