We defended fine pre and checked correctly twice, but turn and river calls with pure air are big over-defends in a spot where population is massively value-heavy.
Flop Analysis
Checking back is fine — on this paired ace board we have pure high card, the limper still has plenty of Ax and 9x, and stabbing with no equity is not mandatory at this SPR.
**Ranges:** SB can easily have many Ax, 9x, pocket pairs and suited connectors after limping, while we have almost no strong Ax in a checked pot, so their range retains a clear value advantage.
**Board:** The double ace plus an extra high card heavily favors the preflop limper’s continuing range and makes our high-card bluff very fragile when called.
---
> **Takeaway:** When we have pure air on a board that massively favors the other range, checking and giving up is completely acceptable.
Turn Analysis
Calling the small turn stab with pure high card is a clear over-call; our hand has almost no realistic way to win versus a value-heavy limp range betting into this texture.
**Ranges:** Once SB checks flop then starts betting here, their range is heavily weighted to any pair or better (Ax, 9x, 8x, pocket pairs) plus some draws, while we still hold literal high card and are behind everything that wants value.
**Board:** This card adds more medium-strength value (8x, improved draws) to SB’s range without improving us, and the paired aces plus connected middles create many hands that will happily bet twice versus check-check.
**Math:** We’re paying 2 into 4.8, needing ~29% equity, but with only a few K outs that are often still losing to Ax/boats and almost no fold equity, our actual equity versus a reasonable betting range is far lower.
---
> **Takeaway:** Versus a limp-range stab on a board that smashes their value range, fold almost all no-pair hands even if the bet looks small.
Note: Turn call with pure high card in a limp pot on a board that massively favors SB’s value range is a clear over-defend and likely losing even given the small sizing.
River Analysis
River is a mandatory fold — we still have only high card on a board where any pair, trips, full houses and now flushes are possible, and we’re relying entirely on SB bluffing too much after betting twice.
**Ranges:** After betting turn and firing again on this river, SB’s range is strongly weighted to made hands: Ax, 9x, 8x, pocket pairs and diamond flushes, while our call down with no pair never beats any of that and only hopes they’re turning random air into a bluff.
**Board:** The final card completes the diamond flush while the paired aces keep full houses possible, so the value side of SB’s betting range gets even stronger and natural bluffs are relatively scarce in a limped pot.
**Math:** We’re calling 4.4 into 11.3 (needing ~28% equity); to justify this with pure high card, SB would need to be bluffing more than a quarter of the time after already betting turn, which is very unlikely for typical players in this line.
---
> **Takeaway:** Do not hero-call off with pure high card on scary completed runouts when villains have a clear range and nut advantage and have shown strength on multiple streets.
Note: River call with literal high card versus a second barrel on a board allowing strong value (pairs, trips, full houses, flushes) is a major over-call and burns chips versus most ranges.
