Flop Analysis
Checking back with overcards and a gutshot after BB checks in a 4-bet pot is fine — we realize equity and keep the pot under control against an overpair-heavy range.
The big leak is calling the cold 4-bet and then overvaluing our draw in a tight 4-bet pot.

Calling the small turn stab with only high card and an open-ender is too loose in a 4-bet pot against an overpair-heavy range, even with attractive pot odds. **Ranges:** After check flop / bet turn, BB’s range is still mostly overpairs and strong hands like QQ+ and occasional AK; our AQ high has almost no showdown value and is drawing versus a very strong made range. **Math:** We’re getting ~3:1 and need 25% equity, but with 8 outs we have ~17–18% immediate equity and our overcards are rarely clean, giving marginal implied odds in a low-SR 4-bet pot. **Plan:** Versus a strong, uncapped 4-bettor we should fold our missed high-card draws to turn barrels and continue mainly with pairs+ and the very best draws that can win big pots when they hit. --- > **Takeaway:** In 4-bet pots, pretty draws without made equity are often folds to turn barrels — the pot is too big and ranges are too strong to chase thinly.
Note: Turn call overestimates our draw’s equity and implied odds in a 4-bet pot versus a strong, overpair-heavy range.
Checking back river after our straight draw misses is standard — we have no showdown value but this board and configuration are poor for bluffing into an uncapped overpair-heavy range.
