We took a loose preflop spot then over-folded a perfectly serviceable bluff-catcher to a small turn stab in position.

Flop Analysis

Flop 8c 7s 5c, we’re heads-up with UTG and hold middle pair with a strong overcard kicker and a club, so we’ve got decent showdown value plus some equity against overcards and draws. As the preflop caller here (per the constraints), checking back in position is completely reasonable: the board is fairly connected, UTG can have a lot of 8x/7x/5x, suited connectors, and small pairs from a limp/call range, and with very deep stacks we don’t mind keeping the pot modest with a medium-strength hand. Betting small would also be viable as a mix for value/protection versus their overcards, worse 7x/5x and draws, but a check back keeps our range wider, controls variance, and sets up comfortable bluff-catch lines on many turns.

Turn Analysis

Turn 3s (8c 7s 5c 3s), UTG leads 14 into 26.5 and we fold. The board stays low and coordinated, but our hand is still a solid one-pair bluff-catcher: middle pair with a strong kicker, no overcard appeared, and we still block some club draws while not blocking the obvious busted stuff like random overcards without equity. Versus a limp/call range, this half-pot stab will contain plenty of single-pair hands (worse 7x/5x, some 8x), straight and flush draws (clubs, spades, 46/69/64-type holdings), and a handful of air/semi-bluffs. With ~34.6% required equity and position, folding this high in our range is too conservative—calling keeps UTG honest and allows us to realize equity and bluff-catch on safe rivers, only folding to big polar bets or very ugly runouts.

Note: Folding middle pair with a strong kicker to a smallish turn lead is too tight; we have more than enough equity and position to continue.
