We took a loose hand too far, under-bluffed our monster draw, then made a catastrophic river fold with the nut flush.

Flop Analysis

Flop comes 3c 8c Qd heads up, BB checks and we have Ac7h in position. This is a very strong draw: nut flush draw plus overcard, and we have a clear opportunity to start building a pot and deny equity from hands like KcJx, JcTx, small pairs, and random overcards with a club. At high SPR, betting our best draws is important: they have plenty of equity when called and they benefit from fold equity versus hands that are slightly ahead. Checking back is defensible as a low-variance line, but it under-realizes the value of one of the top possible draws on this texture.

Note: Checking back with nut flush draw + overcard misses a good, natural stab spot to build the pot and deny equity from worse hands.

Turn Analysis

Turn is Th, board 3c 8c Qd Th, BB checks again and we still hold Ac7h. The board just got more dynamic: straights exist now, and BB’s second check leaves their range relatively capped—many strong Qx and better draws want to put money in at least some of the time. Our nut flush draw plus ace-high is very live and has strong equity versus most of BB’s check range (8x, underpairs, weak Qx, worse club draws, random floats). This is an even better spot to bet than the flop: we can fold out pure air and weak pairs, charge dominated club draws, and set up a river pot where we can get paid when we hit. By checking again, we keep the pot small when we have a premium draw and allow BB to realize equity for free with their entire range.

Note: Double-checking turn with the nut flush draw after BB checks twice passes on a very profitable value + fold-equity bet against a capped range.

River Analysis

River 5c completes the board 3c 8c Qd Th 5c and brings our Ac7h in as the nut flush. BB now leads 10bb into 20.5bb after we’ve shown passivity on flop and turn, and we fold. In pure chip-EV terms, this is an enormous error: with the absolute nuts, we are never supposed to fold for a half-pot bet. Versus any reasonable range construction, BB will have plenty of worse flushes (KcX, JcX, small suited clubs), plus some bluffs or thin value/protection bets with straights or two pair that we crush. Our hand wants to raise for clear value—something like 3–4x the bet is natural at this depth—and never even consider folding. Even if we were somehow worried about full houses (not present here) or straights, the nut flush is simply too strong relative to any sane betting range to fold for this price.

Note: Folding the nut flush to a half-pot river bet is catastrophic; we should be raising for value here virtually always.
