We iso too wide pre, bluff a bad board multiway, then punt on the turn in a pot that’s already telling us we’re crushed.
Flop Analysis
Flop comes 3d 8h As in a 5‑way pot and we bet 2BB into 25BB. Multiway on a high-card board like this, a balanced strategy is heavily check-oriented—ranges are tighter, there are multiple uncapped opponents, and someone almost always connects with the top card or has strong draws/sets. Our tiny stab doesn’t accomplish much: it doesn’t deny equity (the sizing is too small), doesn’t fold out many better hands, and invites raises from the players who actually connect. With a very weak holding like Q2o near the bottom of our range, checking and simply giving up versus aggression preserves EV; we only want to bet hands that can either value-bet confidently into several players or semi-bluff with robust equity.
Note: Betting tiny into four opponents on an Ace-high board with a very weak hand is an unnecessary bluff that gets punished by stronger ranges; checking and often giving up is higher EV.
Turn Analysis
After we bet small on the flop, get called, and then see BU raise big and both we and CO continue, the ranges that remain are extremely strong: lots of Ax, sets, better broadways, and good draws. By the turn on 3d 8h As Qd, the pot is large, SPR versus CO is tiny, and CO is short—CO is already effectively committed with anything decent. Firing a 190BB overbet shove here with our specific hand Q2o, into a pot where the short stack has already put a big chunk in and the deep stack has taken an aggressive flop line, is pure spew: worse hands have mostly folded already, better hands and strong draws are priced in to continue, and we don’t have the equity or blockers to justify forcing action. Strategically, we should be checking, letting CO make the natural all‑in decision with their short stack, and only committing big stacks with the very top of range or robust semi‑bluffs.
Note: Turn overbet jam with a very weak hand into a strong, already-committed short stack and a deep, aggressive range is a major punt; we should check and only stack off with the top of range or strong draws.
