AK on a dry K-high board after calling a 3-bet plays best as a bluff-catcher; raising flop just isolates us vs better and folds out the hands we want in.

Flop Analysis

Flop Kd 9c 2s, pot ~31BB, BB c-bets 10.5BB and we raise to 31.5BB with top pair top kicker. Structurally this is a very dry board: no flush draw, only some gutshots/backdoors in play, and our range is condensed (a lot of medium-strength hands and some strong Kx) while BB is more polar (overpairs, strong Kx, sets, plus air). With AhKh holding ~83% equity vs BB’s betting range, the most efficient play is to call: we keep in bluffs (AQ, QJ, random air) and worse Kx (KQ, maybe KJ) and allow them to keep firing. By raising, we fold out those worse hands and force BB’s range toward overpairs (AA, sometimes QQ), KQ, and sets like 99/22, where our relative equity is worse. On such a static board, we don’t need “protection” and we have position with an excellent bluff-catcher; raising mostly bloats the pot against the top of BB’s value range.

Note: Raising flop with top pair top kicker on a dry K-high board in position over a 1/3-pot c-bet is unnecessary; calling is higher EV because it keeps in bluffs and worse Kx instead of isolating us vs overpairs and sets.

Turn Analysis

Turn 7h, pot 83.5BB, SPR ~0.7 and BB checks. Board is still rainbow and fairly static; we still have top pair top kicker. After we raise flop and get called, ranges are polarized: BB mostly has strong made hands (AA, KK, KQ, 99, 22, maybe some 9x) plus a few stubborn bluffs. With this SPR, our hand is effectively committed anyway. Solver-style play for AhKh at this node is a mix between betting ~½ pot and checking back; betting extracts value from QQ–TT and weaker Kx, while checking controls against sets/AA and protects our check-back range. Given the range node (BB strong nut advantage after calling a flop raise) and that our line already looks strong, our check back is very defensible and not meaningfully lower EV than betting.

River Analysis

River 4c, pot 83.5BB, BB bets 58.5BB, effectively putting us all-in. Final board Kd 9c 2s 7h 4c is rainbow with no straights or flushes possible; all that beats us is two pair or better (K9, K7, 97, sets, slowplayed AA/KK). After we raise flop and check turn, we arrive at river with a fairly strong, capped-ish but still top-heavy range—AhKh is near the very top of our value region. Our pot odds are about 2.4:1, so we need ~29% equity. Even though BB’s range is value-heavy after calling flop raise and leading river, folding top pair top kicker here would overfold severely: we beat all one-pair hands (QQ–TT, weaker Kx) and there simply aren’t any obvious new scare cards. Calling is mandatory in theory and very reasonable in practice.
