Preflop and flop are fine, the tiny turn peel is close but okay, and folding river to the huge overbet is mandatory with our medium-strength bluff-catcher.
Flop Analysis
Three-way on 2s 5h 5s and we’re out of position versus the preflop raiser and BU. Checking our entire range is correct here. When HJ checks and BU stabs 1 into 6.5, that size is very weak and wide—lots of overcards, backdoor draws, and random floats. We’re getting an excellent price to continue with a small made hand that can still be best and that blocks a few combos of straight draws (like 34/46). Calling is a solid, low-variance way to continue and keep HJ’s range wide behind us; raising would isolate ourselves versus better 5x/overpairs far too often given the multiway dynamic.
Turn Analysis
Turn 2d double-pairs the board to 2s 5h 5s 2d, which massively tightens value ranges: strong hands now are 5x, 2x, and slowplayed overpairs/AX that decided to trap. BU again bets 1 into 9.5—this is an extremely small sizing multiway and usually indicates a capped, merged range with lots of air, ace-high, and random overcards that don’t want to check back. Our hand hasn’t improved, but our required equity is tiny: we need under 10% to continue. Against BU’s wide small-bet range plus HJ’s very under-defended check-call range, calling is defensible as a cheap bluff-catch / pot-control line. The important note: we should not get sticky for big bets later; this is a thin, odds-driven peel, not a commitment to showdown at all costs.
River Analysis
River 8c brings 2s 5h 5s 2d 8c, a brick relative to the already polarized structure of the board—no straights complete, draws mostly miss, and anyone with a strong hand was already strong on the turn. After we check and BU’s previous bettor checks behind, we have a decent showdown candidate that beats BU’s missed floats and some HJ ace-highs. Betting ourselves would be thin and opens us up to raises from better boats/overpairs; checking keeps ranges wider and lets opponents make mistakes with both bluffs and overly thin value.
River Analysis
Once HJ now rips 93.8 into 12.5 after having checked flop and turn, the line is brutally polarized: very strong full houses / quads and the occasional creative bluff. We need roughly 47% equity to call this overbet, and in practice HJ’s preflop range (strong pocket pairs, suited broadways, some suited wheel/low cards that can connect with 2/5) produces far more value than bluffs here, especially after BU folds and HJ no longer needs to worry about multiway dynamics. Our hand is far too weak to bluff-catch at this price on this texture, so folding is absolutely correct.
