Preflop and river are fine, but raising top pair on this dry K‑high flop wastes equity by isolating us vs the top of BB’s 3‑bet range.
Flop Analysis
Flop Kd 9c 2s in a 3-bet pot is close to neutral for ranges, but our specific hand (top pair, top kicker) is way ahead of BB’s overall c-bet range and the board is very dry: no flush draws and only a few possible straight draws. When BB bets 16BB into 36.5BB, the high-EV plan with AhKh is to call almost always. Calling keeps in all the AQ/QJ/JT type bluffs and worse Kx that are happy to barrel, and this board doesn’t really need much protection. By raising big to 48BB, we polarize ourselves and let BB fold air and medium-strength hands while continuing mostly with very strong hands like AA, KK/99/22, sometimes KQ or strong draws. That shrinks the bluff portion of their range and leaves us up against a value-heavy, uncapped continuing range with still a lot of chips behind.
Note: Raising big on a dry K‑high flop turns a great bluff-catcher into a thin value hand vs a very strong continuing range; flatting the c-bet keeps BB’s bluffs and worse Kx in and is much higher EV.
Turn Analysis
Turn 7h keeps the board Kd 9c 2s 7h very dry—still no flushes and only a few straight draws possible. After our flop raise gets called, BB’s range is now quite strong (overpairs, sets, some KQ/AK, plus a few strong draws). The pot is 116.5BB and we have 42BB behind (SPR ~0.36), so in theory AhKh mixes between betting (effectively getting stacks in) and checking, with almost identical EV. Betting targets value from hands like QQ–TT and some KQ, but it also slams our stack in vs a range that still contains plenty of two pair+ and overpairs. Checking back, as we did, is a defensible line here: we keep the pot at the same size while still being committed on most rivers, and we allow BB to bluff or value-own themselves later with worse pairs. Given the flop over-raise, checking turn actually helps avoid further overplaying our hand vs a range that’s already quite strong.
River Analysis
River 4c brings Kd 9c 2s 7h 4c. Now straights are possible and there’s a club draw that could have been present on earlier streets, but structurally nothing drastic changes for our specific hand: we still hold top pair, top kicker and lose to two pair or better. Pot is 158.5BB and BB shoves 42BB, offering us about 3.8:1, so we need only ~21% equity. Range-wise we’re in bad shape (BB is strong on this runout), but our specific combo is high up in our value region after taking this line. We beat all missed draws and any overplayed QQ–TT or weaker Kx that doesn’t fold pre, and our pot odds are excellent. Solver treatment for this combo is to continue a large majority of the time, and with this price folding would be too tight.
