KQs flatted pre and called down on QJ2-3-4 is a solid, mostly standard line, with only a small debate about mixing in a protection raise on the turn.
Flop Analysis
Flop Qc Jc 2d multiway is strong for us: top pair/second kicker with backdoor hearts on a wet board where HJ still has the range advantage. Once BB checks and HJ uses a small c‑bet, calling is clearly the priority—our hand has ~73% equity versus the betting range, pot odds are excellent (need ~15.5%), and raising mostly folds out worse top pairs/second pairs while isolating ourselves versus overpairs, better Qx, and strong draws. Keeping our range wider by flatting also protects us when we later bluff-catch on dynamic runouts.
Turn Analysis
Turn 3d brings a second flush draw and a bit more connectivity; HJ barrels 8.3 into 26 with the SPR dropping under 2. Our KQs is still just top pair, but it performs very well versus HJ’s betting range—equity vs that range is high, and we only lose to two-pair+ while a lot of one-pair and draw-heavy hands continue. From a pure GTO point of view, this combo mixes between call and a fairly big raise: raising denies equity from club/diamond draws and hands like KTs/T9s, while call keeps our range more condensed and protects our bluff-catchers on many rivers. In practice, just calling is completely fine and likely higher EV versus a typical field that doesn’t over-bluff turn/river; we avoid getting blown off our equity by a 3‑bet and still realize very strong showdown value.
Note: The only arguable miss is not ever having a protection/deny-equity raise with this combo on such a draw-heavy turn, but calling remains very solid and the EV gap is small.
River Analysis
River 4h completes some straights (A5, 56) but bricks both flush draws; HJ fires 19.3 into 53.5 with ~0.5 SPR. This size is polar, but our hand is still top pair/second kicker and sits high in our condensed range after calling twice—folding too much here would massively overfold versus any reasonable bluff frequency (missed clubs/diamonds, T9, KTs, some random overcards). We’re getting about 2.8:1 and only need ~26.5% equity, which top pair easily clears in this configuration, so calling the river as played is mandatory and well in line with optimal play.
