Everything is pretty standard except the flop raise, which bloats the pot and funnels us into a committed spot on a very safe board where calling is higher EV.
Flop Analysis
Flop Kd 9c 2s in a 3-bet pot is about as good as it gets: we have top pair top kicker on a dry, static board, SPR ~2.1, and we’re in position. BB c-bets 15BB into 20.5BB, which is a big, fairly value-heavy sizing in a spot where their range contains all the strong overpairs (AA, QQ, sometimes KK) plus KQ/KJ, and our range is a bit capped from not 4-betting. With AhKh here, the high-EV line is to call: we’re way ahead of their Kx and bluffs, slightly behind their very top value, and the dry board means there’s almost nothing to “protect” against. When we raise to 45BB, we effectively polarize unnecessarily and start to push out the hands we crush (like QK, JT, some bluffs), while isolating ourselves more versus AA/sets and sometimes KK. It also commits the stacks on a board where we would have realized our equity comfortably by calling.
Note: Raising big on this dry K-high flop with top-top overplays our hand, folds out worse and keeps in stronger, and is significantly lower EV than just calling IP in a 3-bet pot.
Turn Analysis
Turn 7h keeps the board very safe: still rainbow, no straights completed, just a slight increase in connectivity. After our flop raise gets called, pot is 110.5BB and stacks are ~45BB, so SPR ≈ 0.4 and we’re basically committed. BB checks, which heavily weights them toward medium-strength hands (KQ/KJ, TT–QQ) and gives us a clear opportunity to shove or bet large for value and protection with AhKh. Solver mixes between betting around half-pot and checking with this exact combo, so checking back is not a big error – but in practice, once we’ve chosen the high-volatility flop raise and are this short relative to the pot, continuing to put money in with top-top is quite natural and captures value from dominated Kx and pocket pairs.
Note: After committing the stacks with a big flop raise, checking back turn with top-top misses some straightforward value when we’re already pot-committed.
River Analysis
River 4c keeps it rainbow and only introduces some thin straight possibilities; overall, the runout is still very safe for top-top. Pot is 110.5BB, BB shoves 45BB, giving us 3.5:1 and needing only about 22% equity. Range-wise, BB can absolutely show up with value that beats us (sets, maybe slowplayed AA, two-pair combos that 3-bet pre), but they also have plenty of one-pair hands (KQ/KJ, TT–QQ) and some bluffs that didn’t improve. With AhKh at the top of our one-pair region and this price, folding would be far too tight; calling is the correct and standard decision.
