Preflop and turn jam are excellent; the only leak is skipping a flop c‑bet with top set and letting BTN realize equity for free.
Flop Analysis
Flop 9d Jh 5h in a 3‑bet pot, SPR ~3.9, we have top set. Range vs range, BB has a big nut advantage here (overpairs, sets, strong top pairs) and BTN has a lot of broadways/suited connectors that either missed or have draws. This is a board where betting small at a high frequency performs very well: we get value from overpairs (QQ/TT sometimes, 99/55 less often), Jx (KJ/QJ/JT), heart draws, and straight draws like T8s, and we deny free equity to hands like AhQh, KThh, or overcards with a heart. Checking does protect some check‑range, but with this SPR and this nutted hand, betting is higher EV.
Note: By checking top set in a 3‑bet pot on a wet board, we give BTN a free card with all their overcards and draws instead of starting to stack the pot and charge their equity.
Turn Analysis
Turn Qc, pot 24.6BB, SPR still ~3.9 and action went check‑check on flop. This card improves BTN a lot (QJ, AQ, KQ, QhTh, plus more equity for T8), and our line under‑reps our hand, so betting now is mandatory for both value and protection. The 12BB stab (just under half pot) is fine: it keeps weaker Qx and Jx in, charges draws, and starts rebuilding the pot we missed on flop. If anything, we could even go a bit larger (16–18BB) given how many drawing/one‑pair hands can call, but betting is clearly correct and structurally sound.
Turn Analysis
After we bet 12BB and BTN raises to 24BB (a small raise), the pot is 60.6BB and BTN has ~72.4BB behind. BTN’s raising range is very value‑dense here: straights (T8s), sets (99/55, occasionally slowplayed JJ), two pairs like QJ/J9 sometimes, plus some combo‑draws and semi‑bluffs. With top set and this SPR, flatting to "pot control" is a mistake—too many rivers (hearts, T, K, some A) either kill our action or improve BTN’s equity/hand. Jamming 83.8BB over the raise is the clean play: we realize full value versus QJ/J9/overpairs/draws that can’t fold, and we deny equity to drawing hands that would love to see a river for 12BB more. Given we’re never folding and stacks are shallow relative to the pot, shove > call every time.
