Defend AJs pre, check flop with A-high, then check turn with top pair on the ace—don’t turn it into a bluff and get raised off our equity.
Flop Analysis
On 2d8c9c rainbow, we’ve got A-high with a backdoor diamond draw and no real showdown value yet. This board is very connected and UTG+1 has plenty of 9x, 8x, and overpairs, so our range is only slightly ahead. With AJs, checking and letting UTG+1 stab is preferred; if we do bet, a medium 60% pot sizing is better than this small 25% stab, which doesn’t pressure their range enough.
Note: Firing a small 25% pot c-bet with A-high on a draw-heavy board is too weak; checking or using a medium 60% pot sizing is higher EV.
Turn Analysis
The As on the turn is a great card for us—top pair, no draw—but it also smashes UTG+1’s range. After we bet small on the flop and get called, checking this turn with top pair is the right idea; betting 18.5BB into 37BB just turns our hand into a bluff and invites a raise from AQ/AK/AT and strong draws. Once UTG+1 does raise, we’re in a nasty spot and should just fold.
Note: Firing a big turn bet with top pair on an ace after a small flop c-bet is too ambitious; checking and realizing our equity is much better, and once raised we should just let it go.
