With second pair in position versus a short stack, we should just bet flop and turn instead of slow-playing and trying to get thin value only on the river.
Flop Analysis
Flop J82r, SPR ~3.6, BB checks and we’ve got second pair, no kicker but very live against a 9bb stack. This is a straightforward small bet spot—charge overcards, gutshots like T9/97/Q9, and worse pairs like 2x or weaker 8x. Checking back gives a free card in a situation where we’re usually ahead and can comfortably bet-call against a short stack.
Note: Checking back second pair on a dry J82r versus a short stack misses clear value and protection when we’re often ahead and can play for stacks comfortably.
Turn Analysis
Turn 3c changes basically nothing and BB checks again; pot is still small vs stack. After checking flop, this is an even better time to start betting for value and protection with our 8x. Another check just compounds the flop mistake, under-realizing equity and letting villain see a river with all kinds of random overcards and gutters.
Note: Not betting turn after a flop check back continues to pass up solid value/protection with second pair in position versus a capped, short-stacked range.
River Analysis
River 5h puts 4-to-a-straight (A4) out there and BB checks a third time. After checking twice, our line under-reps our hand, but villain still has plenty of Jx and some rivered pairs that happily call. A small 2.5bb stab is defensible as thin value versus random 2x/3x/5x/8x, but the big EV was earlier; this street is fine, the leak was not betting flop/turn.
